Kelp Bass, Bull Bass or Calico Bass (Paralabrax clathratus)
Information
Usually solitary but join together to feed on small fish. They do not require kelp and can congregate (or school/group) at structures, like shipwrecks, rocks, pipes and pilings. Feed on small fishes, squid and crustaceans. Range Pacific coast, Oregon to Baja California. Sea bass, grouper; Family: Serranidae. Larval kelp bass drift along as plankton and settle on blades of giant kelp. The kelp act as sieves straining larvae out of the water. The ear bones (otoliths) of kelp bass are occasionally found in Indian middens (refuse piles).
